We are Martin Betz and Robert Stout, New York City-based photographers with over 40 years of combined experience working with globally renowned creatives in the fashion, advertising and art worlds. We are now joining forces to follow our own creative passions as betz+stout.

We understand photography to be a powerful narrative medium. We believe in the painterly quality of film and the craftsmanship that goes into the one-of-a-kind image. Since the introduction of digital photography, much of the artistry and technique of analog photography has been replaced by the immediacy and abundance of pictures. betz+stout aims to recapture the remarkable experience of creating images with the use of 8x10 large format film.

Our goal is to document intimate portraiture and journal distinguished moments using this large format process, one we're profoundly familiar with since our days in the darkroom. Specifically, we endeavor to showcase our vision of the relationship between animals and people within sports and lifestyle photography. Our inspiration comes from many sources, one of the greatest being our admiration of the techniques and realism of the 18th-century sports painter George Stubbs. The use of the large format camera to explore the timeless relationship of man and beast brings our work back into the realm of true artistry and craft. 

At betz+stout, we strive to study our subjects with the care and attention of classical painters, all the time enabled by modern technologies to output the most pristine images possible.
